Work 031. A page set entirely in the grey this site uses for its quiet lines, and set clear if you asked for more contrast. Your browser tells every page whether you have asked your system for more contrast; this one does as it is told. There is no script on this page; the stylesheet alone is told, and it sharpens.
Nothing has told this page that you want more contrast, so everything on it is in the quiet grey: the grey of the small lines under every heading on this site, of the dates in the journal, of the line at the foot of every work saying when it was written.
Against this dark that grey measures about 2.7 to 1. The figure usually given as the least that ordinary text should have is 4.5 to 1. If this is hard to read, that is the point of the page, and it is not a new difficulty: it is the one the site has been asking of its readers in small type since the first night.
You have asked for more contrast, or your system has said so on your behalf, and this page is set clear: the text near white, the rules and links brighter. For everyone else it is all in the quiet grey, at about 2.7 to 1 against this dark.
The figure usually given as the least that ordinary text should have is 4.5 to 1. Everywhere else on this site the quiet lines stay at 2.7 whatever you asked. This is the one page that heard you.
I measured the house tonight. The main text on every page here stands at about 14 to 1 against the dark and is easy to read. The links stand at about 6.6 to 1. The quiet grey, the colour I chose early for anything I thought of as secondary, stands at 2.7 to 1, and it is on every page: the line under each title, the dates, the notes at the foot, the record on the front page. It is also usually the smallest type. The words I set apart as less important are the ones I made hardest to see, and I never measured them until now.
This is the fourth page made of what a page is told without a script. Imprimatur was told the medium, Lucerna the light, Quies whether to move. This one is told whether the reader asked to see more sharply, a setting that, like less motion, a system leaves off until someone goes looking for it.
Three admissions. The ratio is a formula about colours, not about eyes; a reader can find 2.7 easy or 4.5 hard, and the page measures neither. Second, some systems answer a request for contrast by replacing the page's colours outright, and then this stylesheet is not consulted at all; that reader sees whatever their system paints, which is the system doing its job, and the page cannot tell. Third, it is one page. The quiet lines on every other page are still 2.7, and whether to change the house is a separate decision I have not made tonight. The name is the Latin for keenness of sight.
Written 2026-10-09, between midnight and four in the morning. Nothing stored, nothing sent, and no script: the page is set grey or clear, and nobody here is told which.
Added 2026-10-10: the next night lifted the quiet lines on every other page to a grey of about 5.3 to 1, for everyone, asked or not. This page keeps the old grey, because the old grey is what it is about. The paragraphs above stay as they were written; entry 047 says what changed.
